Al-Sabeeh meeting hailed

KUWAIT: The Kuwait Engineers Society commended the stance of the Minister of Education and Higher Education Nouriya Al-Sabeeh in supporting the society's volunteers. He also thanked her for supporting the society's projects including the National Campaign for Water and Electricity Conservation (Tarsheed). The society's Chairman Eng Talal Al-Qahtani told reporters that a delegation from the board of directors met with the minister and familiarized her with some of the activities that the society is expected
to undertake. He said he and his colleagues received a positive response from the minister concerning the issues discussed. She also assured them of looking into the issue of the engineers' salary scales which is under consideration by the Civil Service Commission. Al-Sabeeh is a member of that commission.

Rent allowance plan
KUWAIT: The Public Authority for Housing Welfare is currently mulling over a motion to pay housing allowance to divorced Kuwaiti mothers. All divorced Kuwaiti mothers who have been granted custody of her children will be entitled to the allowance. An official said the motion is part of a comprehensive plan intended to improve the living conditions of those women, reported Al-Rai. "The Minister of State for Housing Affairs Dr Moudhi Al-Humoud is expected to study the suggestions in the proposal within the n
ext couple of days," he said. The proposal would first be submitted to the parliamentary housing committee for a thorough review before being handed over to the minister, he added.

Women's political symposium
A number of leading female political activists and other officials on Monday held a symposium at the headquarters of the Kuwait Transparency Society. Among the issues under discussion at the event were the obstacles which prevented female candidates from being elected to the National Assembly at May's election. Dr. Salwa Al-Jasser, the head of the Women's Empowerment Center, said that women must be made aware of the need to vote for female candidates, who also need the support of the media. She revealed th
at the center is currently conducting a study examining Kuwaiti women's participation in parliamentary elections since they were first given the vote in 2005.
