CAIRO: Kuwaiti exhibited great energy in its participation in the 55th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO), said a Kuwaiti Health Ministry official yesterday.
Undersecretary at the Health Ministry Ali Al-Saif said that an award by Kuwait's Foundation prize for the Control of Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Diabetes was given to Dr Sameer Allam of Lebanon, adding that the foundation would also hold a sideline meeting for discussing applications for the prize.
He pointed out that General Director of WHO Dr Margaret Chan lauded Kuwait's efforts to combat smoking, one of the major causes of cancerous diseases.
EMRO said that the meeting, which began yesterday and would last till Oct 14 in Cairo, are to discuss a number of health issues, including means to tackle HIV/AIDS, Malaria and smoking as well as the effects of climate change on health.
The WHO regional 22-member country office will also discuss recent achievements it has made and future proposals it wishes to achieve, to the attendance of ambassadors, international organization envoys and health experts. --- KUNA
