Salafists prepare draft law

Published Date: June 15, 2008

KUWAIT: A Salafist MP held meetings with some prominent Islamist clerics during which they discussed implementing Islamic laws, a source close to the Islamic Salafist Alliance said. The clerics have prepared the law and the MPs will submit it to the National Assembly later. The law will cover different aspects like enforcing the veil and Islamic dress on women, restricting women's travel without the approval from father or husband. A special committee will be formed to check if women need to travel at all.

The law also plans to adopt some Islamic laws to regulate the working of financial companies and banks, in addition to curbing media freedom. It also aims at introducing gender segregation at universities, colleges, ministries and private institutions. The source said if the draft law is passed then more Islamic laws will be executed later. However, the Islamists face an obstacle in the form of a Article 2 of the Kuwaiti Constitution. They will push for amending it by voting or by coercing the people to s
upport the law, reported Al-Nahar. MPs are still hesitating about submitting the draft because it may create fresh tension between the legislative and executive authorities.
